Householders in Scotland could save or £151 million every year by installing renewable heating technologies, new research claims.

A YouGov poll by the Energy Saving Trust (EST) found although people know technologies such as biomass boilers and ground source heat pumps are cheap ways to heat their homes, more than half (51%) think they are too expensive to install.

Nearly a fifth (18%) said disruption during installation would put them off renewable heating.

According to the EST, householders could save up to £3,400 every year by installing a biomass boiler while an air-source system could result in savings of up to £1,200.

Mike Thornton, EST Scotland Director said: “They don’t realise how affordable renewables can be once savings and incentives are taken into account. In fact, not only can a renewable system cut your energy bills, it can actually generate cash for you.”

The UK Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) and Feed-in Tariff (FiT) schemes can generate cash for households and they can also get interest-free loans of up to £100,000, funded by the Scottish Government.

It is holding Green Network open days on October 3rd and 4th, where Scottish homes and businesses will showcase how renewable technology works and what savings they are making.
