A dip in wind power today is set to reverse over the weekend, according to npower’s daily market report.

Gemma Bruce, Client Portfolio Manager at the supplier’s Optimisation Desk said: “Wind generation has dipped to 2.1gigawatts (GW) this morning.”

Looking ahead, she added: “It is expected to peak over the weekend at over 7GW before tailing off next week to around 3GW for much of the week.”

Today’s wind slip means more gas fired power plants have roared into action: “Gas… is currently contributing around 38% to the UK generation stack, followed by coal at around 33%.”

A predicted fall in demand for gas and power next week has seen prices begin lower, said the analyst: “UK power and gas markets opened lower this morning as prompt fundamentals begin the day softer.

“[This was] led by a lower 30-day demand forecast across the entire horizon by 10 million cubic meters (mcm) per day.”

The price of Brent crude oil held fairly steady at around $86 per barrel, added the analyst.
