Didcot B gas plant has made a speedy return to service after it was struck by fire a week ago.

No one was injured in the fire which raged last Sunday, engulfing one of the cooling towers.

However it did not affect the generating units themselves and this morning module 5 began exporting around 50% of its electricity to the National Grid.

Module 6 was not disrupted by the fire.

Roger Miesen, Head of Hard Coal and Gas on the RWE Generation board said: ‘It’s good news that Module 5 is back online so quickly. It will be available to generate power this winter and essential repairs will be in the region of single digit million pounds.”

Investigations continue into the “root cause of the fire”, according to power plant owner npower. Last week fire brigade suggested an electrical fault could have been behind it.
