South Korea has confirmed plans for a tidal project that will have a total capacity of 28MW.

Tocardo Tidal Turbines has been awarded the contract by South Korean energy firm Ekornergy to install the turbines in the Mokpo Jeonnam region.

The Netherlands-based firm will start manufacturing the first 15 T2 200KW turbines late next year as part of a 3MW demonstration project.

It then expects to start producing its larger T3 turbines in 2016 for installation in a commercial tidal array totalling 25MW.

Hans van Breugel, CEO Tocardo said: “We’re looking forward to working with Ekornergy and other Korean partners to seize this opportunity to supply the Korean grid with significant amounts of clean and reliable energy, helping reduce the country’s carbon emissions.”
