Energy Secretary Ed Davey has guaranteed businesses’ energy audits will go to “the people who need to hear it”.

Speaking to businesses at one of the Energy Saving Opportunities Scheme (ESOS) roadshows in London, he said the audits will be seen by board members.

He told ELN: “One of the whole purposes of ESOS is to try to give the information to the people who need to hear it.

“People will be required every four years to do an audit of their energy use and they will be able to use that to cut their energy bills and it’s the sort of report that will go to the board, to people who need to take those decisions. So this is one of our ways of improving on what’s gone on before.”

ESOS is a mandatory energy assessment initiative for large businesses that employ more than 250 people and with a turnover of more than €50 million (£39.6m).

It is estimated to bring savings worth £1.6 billion to the UK, primarily through savings on energy bills, according to DECC.

Businesses could save more than £250 million a year if they reduce their energy usage by less than 1% as a result of the audits.

While people have had energy saving opportunities spelt out to them in the past, a majority of them haven’t been implemented, partly due to the message not getting across to the board.

Mr Davey also said the initiative has been set up to make the necessity for energy efficiency “an opportunity rather than a burden” for the business community.
