Almost three quarters (72%) of consumers are happy to have smart meters installed in their homes, according to new research.
Nearly 60% said they would use one to reduce energy usage and become more energy efficient while 42% hope it will help them get more accurate bills.
Despite the appetite for the technology however, a quarter of them still “don’t know what a smart meter is or does”, the survey of more than 4,400 energy customers found.
Baroness Verma, Parliamentary under Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change welcomed the “positive results”.
She added: “Smart meters will help put consumers in control of their energy use, bring an end to estimated bills and help people to save energy and money. We want all consumers to benefit which is why, as the rollout progresses, Smart Energy GB will be engaging consumers to build consumer confidence and understanding about smart meters.”
The uSwitch survey also revealed consumers that use smart meters are more satisfied with their energy suppliers compared to those with traditional meters and 64% of people who use the technology said they would recommend their supplier to family and friends.
