MPs are calling for the Government and retailers to do more to help people make better food choices when shopping – with better labels.

In a report published today, they said only 17% of people actively seek out information on a product’s sustainability.

The ‘Food security: demand, consumption and waste’ report by the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee said consumers were willing to pay more for sustainable products.

But their day to day food shopping does not reflect this, the report found.

Committee Chair, Anne McIntosh MP said: “With shoppers typically spending only a few seconds deciding what product to buy, the food industry and retailers can better help consumers to buy food from sustainable sources through providing clearer and more informative information.”
