Paul Massara’s position as boss of British energy supplier npower is in shaky territory, if rumours are to be believed.

Massara has been chief executive since 2012 when he took over from Volker Beckers, before that he was npower’s chief commercial operator.

German magazine Manager reports parent company RWE is “disappointed” with npower’s performance.

RWE noted “weak” performance for npower’s supply business in its 2014 third quarter results, stating it expects npower to close 2014 “not moderately, but significantly down year on year”.

Lined up as successor is Paul Coffey, who has been chief operating officer for RWE Innogy, the German utility’s renewable energy branch, since 2009, claims the magazine.

There was no sign of discord between RWE chief executive Terium and Massara when ELN attended a press trip to RWE’s headquarters in Essen last year, when both took questions in the same boardroom the Brit gives company updates to his German boss.

A spokesperson for npower denied the rumour.
