Biomass energy could be a big player in getting the UK to reach its 2050 climate change targets.

That’s according to a recent paper that claims biomass heating could be a long-term, low-carbon heating solution and it should be supported more by the Government.

Biomass heating systems burn wood pellets, chips or logs to provide warmth to a single room or to power central heating and hot water boilers.

The level to which the energy source could be deployed is uncertain because of a number of restrictions. These include limited forest area, lack of storage and transport and convincing private landowners to manage forests for biomass, the paper said.

The paper, produced by CPL Renewables which develops and distributes wood pellet heating solutions in the UK, claims the government who see the low energy resource as limited should reconsider evaluating its role so that it could be a new sector for 2020 and beyond.

The UK has an ambitious target to reduce its carbon emissions by 80% in 2050, with a 20% reduction target set for 2020.
