DONG Energy has named MHI Vestas Offshore Wind as the preferred turbine supplier for a project in the UK.

MHI Vestas Offshore Wind is a joint venture between Danish wind turbine maker Vestas and Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

The 330MW first phase of the Walney 3 offshore wind farm will feature the company’s V164 8MW turbine and the blades will be manufactured at its factory on the Isle of Wight.

DONG Energy has decided to split the offshore wind project Walney Extension into Phase 1 and 2, each with a capacity of 330MW.

Energy Secretary Ed Davey said: “We are the world’s number one for offshore wind investment – and we want to see a strong supply chain here in the UK to drive down costs and create even more jobs. I look forward to MHI Vestas Offshore Wind realising their ambition to build a sustainable UK manufacturing base.”

Construction could start in 2016 but a final investment decision has yet to be made.
