A deal has been done between utility giant EDF and service agreement regulator Amey to install smart meters across the UK.

Amey will install and maintain the new ‘smart’ electricity and gas meters across Scotland, the North East and Eastern England. The contract is expected to be worth £40 million over the next four years.

It comes after the government’s initiative to have all utility suppliers install smart meters in homes by 2020.

Smart meters give customers more control over their energy use by giving accurate meter readings which could help save energy and money.
