Independent power supplier Utilita Energy has announced it is reducing gas prices by 5.6%.

The energy firm supplies gas and electricity to more than 180,000 homes across the UK.

The price cut, which comes as a result of the recent fall in wholesale costs and applies to its ‘Smart Energy’ prepayment tariff, will come into effect on 1st April 2015. Customers currently pay an average of £1,205 per year for their energy.

Bill Bullen, Director and founder of Utilita said: “We always strive to offer competitively priced energy and wherever possible, smash the prices offered by the Big Six.

“Utilita’s mission is to keep costs down for each and every customer, therefore we rarely get the chance to announce price reductions simply because we are already amongst the cheapest suppliers.”

The price reduction will not affect the Norweb, Manweb and Northern regions as the energy firm reduced gas prices in those areas from 1st January 2015.

The Big Six suppliers – British Gas, E.ON, EDF Energy, npower, SSE and ScottishPower – also announced gas price cuts earlier this year.
