The UK gas system is undersupplied as colder temperatures have pushed demand up, according to npower’s daily market report.

The linepack is forecast to close at -14mcm short and the temperature in the UK is 11% above seasonal normal levels.

Flows from the Netherlands remain at zero while flows from Norway are “quiet” at -17mcm.

Most of the Norwegian maintenance is due to end tomorrow so there should be higher flows for the rest of the week, Ben Spry, npower’s Optimisation Desk Manager said.

The Interconnector exports have dropped to -20mcm.

The power system is healthy with a forecast peak margin of more than 15GW.

CCGT generation has gone up to replace coal as the main fuel source. It is generating -13.5GW (36%) with coal at -9.6GW (25%).

Wind generation is quiet at 1GW (2.8%) but is expected to increase over the next few days before going down this weekend.

Oil is still supported at more than $65 a barrel (£43Bbl). Libya’s production is expected to drop as the EL Feel oilfield workers are on strike.
