Ireland’s Electricity Supply Board (ESB) and Coriolis Energy have joined forces to develop £600 million worth of onshore wind farms in the UK.

They plan to build nine projects with a total capacity of up to 400MW – enough to power 225,000 homes.

The first wind farm is expected to be operational by 2019.

The majority of projects will be located in Scotland but “opportunities for new wind farm developments will be pursued throughout the UK”, the companies said.

The Conservative Party has said it would scrap support for onshore wind farms if it wins the election.
