The European Commission is taking France to Court over poor wastewater treatment.
It said 17 locations are listed as not having wastewater treatment “up to EU standards”.
France was initially warned about this particular case in 2009.
The EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive requires member states to ensure towns and cities properly collect and treat their urban wastewater.
The Commission stated: “Untreated urban waste water can endanger the health of European citizens and the environment. The European Commission has to ensure the level of treatment of urban waste water can be guaranteed throughout the European Union.”
If by the time the case goes to trial and the Commission receives new information showing the locations are in compliance, they will be removed from the list.
