US electric car manufacturer Tesla Motors has unveiled batteries that can store energy for homes and businesses.

The ‘Powerwall Home Battery’ is a rechargeable battery designed to store solar power for backup and self consumption.

It can be fitted on a wall and integrated with the local grid to harness excess power and bring energy to remote areas that are not on the grid.

“Tesla Energy is a critical step in this mission to enable zero-emission power generation”, the company said in a statement.

It will sell the 7kWh unit for $3,000 (£1,954) while the 10kWh unit will be sold for $3,500 (£2,275) to installers.

Tesla is also building its giant electric vehicles battery ‘Gigafactory’ in Nevada, US.
