A US energy company has provided $1 million (£630,000) for an energy storage project.

The University of South Florida St. Petersburg (USFSP) will use the cash to develop a 200KW battery.

It currently has a 100KW solar panel system and two small energy storage systems.

It plans to install the new battery with more capacity so it can store the excess energy.

Sophia Wisniewska, Regional Chancellor of USFSP said the university aims to manage energy costs and promote sustainability on campus.

She added: “We are pleased and proud to have been awarded this grant and to provide faculty and students with a chance to help build something of lasting impact.”
