Amazon plans to build a 208MW wind farm in North Carolina.

Energy company Iberdrola Renewables has been selected to build and operate the project which is claimed to be the largest wind farm in the American state.

The Amazon Wind Farm and is expected to generate around 670,000MWh of energy – enough to power more than 61,000 US homes per year.

It is estimated to be completed by December 2016.

The energy produced will be delivered into the electrical grid that supplies both current and future Amazon’s Cloud data centers, stated the company.

North Carolina GovernorPat McCrory said: “As a leading Internet platform and cloud services provider, Amazon continues to invest in renewable energy by supporting this wind farm in our great state.

“This kind of collaboration between Amazon and Iberdrola Renewables promotes North Carolina’s continued economic growth and highlights the importance of supporting the ongoing expansion of the technology sector in our state.”

In November last year, Amazon pledged to get all of its data centres to run 100% on renewable energy.

The company claims around 25% of the power consumed by its global infrastructure is from renewable energy sources.

Amazon is also working on a 80MW solar farm in Virginia.
