The construction of a 10MW battery-based energy storage facility has begun in Northern Ireland.

The Kilroot Advancion Energy Storage Array is located in northern Belfast and is expected to help balance supply and demand as well as support the island’s grid.

It will also enhance power supply, enable more efficient dispatch of existing generation assets and increase the ability to integrate renewable power sources.

The project is owned by AES UK & Ireland and is expected to start operating by the end of the year.

Gordon Nixon, Managing Director at Scotts Electrical Services, which was awarded one of the contracts for the project said: “Energy storage is an innovative technology, which could play an important role in Northern Ireland’s energy future and we’re proud to be installing the most significant project to-date on these islands.”
