India is on track to achieving its goal of installing 175GW of renewable energy by 2022.

That’s three times the electricity capacity of Australia, according to a new report.

Solar installations are expected to hit 75GW by 2022, delivering 110TWh of electricity.

However it falls short of the government’s target of 100GW in the next seven years.

Wind installation of 60GW could generate 19% of the uplift while a combined capacity of nuclear, gas, biomass and hydro could deliver another 25%.

The report from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) also stated India’s Government is on its way to double domestic coal production to 1,500Mt per year.

It added the measures India is taking to transform its electricity grid would boost the economic growth in the country by 6%-8% annually.
