A solar farm worth £5 million has been opened in Wales.

The Port of Barry Solar Farm has a capacity of 4.5MW and is located in the west of Cardiff.

The solar array is expected to generate enough energy per year to power 200 homes.

The electricity produced will power port operations and the surplus energy will be exported to the national grid.

It has been developed by Associated British Ports (ABP) South Wales.

Matthew Kennerley, Director of ABP South Wales said: “It is designed to reduce the carbon footprint of the port and make it more competitive. We are committed to the environment and are continually thinking about how we can integrate the latest renewable energy technology into our port operations.”

Plans to expand the solar farm to 5MW are underway.
