Energy and Environment Manager, Northern Rail Ltd

Northern Rail plays a vital role in the north of England by connecting tens of thousands of people to work, leisure, education and more every day. Northern Rail are owned by a 50:50 joint venture between Serco and Abellio. Northern have 5,000 employees, and deliver 2,500 train services every weekday, which call at over 500 stations, of which Northern manage 463, making Northern Rail the largest train operator in the UK.

Gareth is the Energy and Environment Manager of Northern Rail, managing a team of 3 and employed to create and oversee the environmental strategy and performance improvement. This is achieved through the corporate wide ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 accredited Environmental Management System. Gareth and Northern attained ISO 50001 in 2011 and were one of the first companies to be awarded the accreditation in the UK.

In order to manage energy effectively Northern have smart metering and an extensive monthly reporting mechanism to ensure all staff and managers are engaged in energy management. Eco-driving initiatives have been incorporated into the core driving skills and case studies of LED lighting, voltage optimisation and heater controls have been implemented.

Gareth is a member of IEMA and the EI and graduated from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 2003 with an MSC in Environmental Engineering.
