npower has become the first company in the energy sector to be awarded the international triple certification for cutting carbon, waste and water.

The power supplier has been recognised by Carbon Trust for encouraging efficiency across its offices and customer contact centres.

It reduced its carbon emissions by 15.9% following the implementation of a number of measures including the use of solar to heat water, wind turbines and energy efficient lighting.

The company also increased its recycling rates from 45% to 71%, reducing overall waste by 19%.

The Carbon Trust Standard recognises best practices and achievements in reducing energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions, managing and cutting water usage as well as solid and hazardous waste.

Darran Messem, Managing Director of Certification at the Carbon Trust said: “As an energy supplier, it’s no surprise that npower understands the environmental and financial value that can be achieved through improving the efficiency of its own operations.

“We’d like to congratulate everyone at npower that has contributed to the company becoming the first power utility to be awarded triple certification to the Carbon Trust Standard.”
