The European Investment Bank (EIB) has issued a new $500 million (£248m) green bond in Canadian Dollars.

The transaction takes the total investment in the Climate Awareness Bond (CAB) to €10.8 billion (£7.7bn) across 11 currencies.

CABs provide investors with the opportunity to invest in projects contributing to climate action.

They will include renewable energy projects such as wind, hydropower, wave, tidal, solar and geothermal production.

They will also incorporate energy efficiency projects such as district heating, building insulation and equipment replacement.

The bond generated “strong demand from a diverse investor base including investors with explicit ‘Socially Responsible Investing’ approach”.

The bank launched its first CAB in pounds sterling last year and the first ever green Indian rupee bond was recently issued outside India.

Earlier this year the EIB invested £36 million to develop renewable energy projects in the Europe.
