Siemens has been awarded contracts to supply turbines for three onshore wind projects in Scotland.

They are expected to have a total capacity of 126MW and will generate enough electricity to power up to 50,000 households in South and North Ayrshire.

Two of the projects are owned by ScottishPower Renewables while the other is a community project.

The engineering giant will construct, install and commission 23 turbines with a total capacity of 69MW at Dersalloch wind farm.

It will also supply turbines with a total capacity of 51MW for the two phases of Ewe Hill wind project in Dumfries and Galloway.

The Millour Hill Community Wind farm will receive two turbines from the German company. The project has already six turbines installed.

Thomas Richterich, CEO Onshore of Siemens’ Wind Power and Renewables Division said: “These three projects will provide reliable, clean energy for the region – equivalent to the demand of both Scotland’s Orkney and Shetland Islands.”

The UK Government’s Spending Review confirmed community energy projects will be excluded from tax benefits.

Earlier this year, it also announced it will scrap subsidies for onshore wind projects from April 2016.
