Brazil announced it awarded 476.8MW of solar contracts in 2015.

That’s a fifth of all electricity purchased this year, according to the government.

It is also the first time the capacity of solar energy surpassed the amount of hydropower in the country.

The nation selected a total of 137 projects in five different auctions this year which represent an investment of $5.3 billion (£3.6bn).

Together they are expected to generate 2,297MW of electricity between 2016 and 2020.
