Former French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius has reportedly decided to leave his position as Chair of COP21.

He was meant to stay in the post until late 2016 to implement the UN climate agreement reached last December.

However reports claim he has been chosen by French President Francois Hollande to head the country’s top constitutional court.

In a letter sent to some media outlets, Mr Fabius reportedly said he made the decision to step down to avoid “starting a controversy” about holding two positions.

Mr Fabius did not suggest a successor.
