French Minister of Energy and Environment Ségolène Royal has been appointed as the new President of COP21.

The decision follows former Chair of UN climate talks Laurent Fabius‘ resignation yesterday.

Ms Royal will be responsible for implementing the climate agreement reached in December in Paris.

She will stay in the position until November when the next COP conference starts in Marrakech.

She told a French media outlet: “It is true the President [François Hollande] proposed me to accept this responsibility and I accepted.”
