The amount of municipal waste generated per person in the EU in 2014 was 475kg.

That’s a 10% fall compared to 2002 when it reached a peak of 527kg per person, according to data released by Eurostat.

It added the production of waste per person has “constantly” decreased in the region since 2007.

Of the 475kg of the waste generated, 465 kg per person were treated following different methods: 28% was recycled, 28% landfilled, 27% incinerated and 16% composted, the data revealed.

The highest amount of waste generated per person was in Denmark with 759kg per person, followed by Cyprus, Germany and Luxembourg.

With less than 300kg per person, Romania, Poland and Latvia generated the lowest amount of waste in 2014, it added.

The UK generated 482kg per person in 2014.
