A 299MW biomass plant will be built in Teesside after it received its final investment decision last week.

A partnership between Samsung C&T and Spanish firm Tecnicas Reunidas, has been appointed for the construction of the plant which will use combined heat and power (CHP).

Last week, Macquiare announced it will invest £900 million in the plant which is scheduled to be completed by 2020.

Around 600 jobs are expected to be created during construction.

Ben Elsworth, CEO of MGT Teesside, which designed the biomass plant, added: “The Tees REP project had to overcome many hurdles and Macquarie’s involvement was critical to this successful outcome.

“This has been a huge team effort from many different parties over a long period and we are proud to be delivering a project which is not only low carbon but which will meaningfully add to the UK’s energy security at an important time.”
