IKEA is to install a 1.18MW rooftop solar array at one of its new stores.

The solar array on the roof of the Renton, Washington shop will have 3,420 panels, which the retailer claims will make it the largest in the state.

It will produce around 1.3 millionkWh of electricity annually, enough to supply 137 homes for a year.

Diedre Goodchild, Store Manager, said: “We are excited to further our sustainability commitment with solar panels on this store. Installing Washington’s largest rooftop array advances our vision of creating a better everyday life for the many.”

This installation will be IKEA’s 44th solar project in the US. The company has solar panels at nearly 90% of its locations in the country, generating more than 40MW in total.

IKEA owns and operates each of the solar energy systems on its buildings and has allocated $2.5 billion (£1.89bn) to invest in global renewable energy through 2020.
