General Motors (GM) aims to run all of its operations on 100% renewable energy by 2050.

It plans to work towards this goal by improving energy efficiency and transitioning to clean power sources.

In 2015, the company used 9TWh of electricity to manufacture vehicles and power its offices, technical centers and warehouses.

The target builds on the company’s previous goal of having 125MW of renewable generation in place by 2020. GM expects to exceed this when two new wind projects come online this year to help power four factory sites.

The firm currently has 22 facilities equipped with solar arrays and three powered by gas from landfills.

Amy Davidsen, Executive Director at The Climate Group said: “This bold and ambitious commitment from General Motors will undoubtedly catch the attention of the global automotive industry.

“GM has already saved millions of dollars by using renewable energy and like any smart business that recognizes an investment opportunity, they want to seize it fully. We hope that through this leadership, other heavy manufacturing companies will be inspired to make the switch too.”
