Donald Trump has announced Rex Tillerson as the US Secretary of State.

The CEO of ExxonMobil is well experienced in international negotiations and has successfully led a global multinational – two of the reasons why Mr Trump thinks he’s the best candidate for the position.

Mr Trump said: “His tenacity, broad experience and deep understanding of geopolitics make him an excellent choice for Secretary of State.”

The US Senate will need to approve the nomination before Mr Tillerson can assume the position.

There have already been suggestions that both Democrat and Republican parties are likely to see some members object, on the grounds of the Texan’s close ties with Vladimir Putin and the large investments he has made in the Russian energy industry.

In 2013 Mr Tillerson was awarded the Order of Friendship, Russia’s highest honour available for foreign nationals.

President-elect Trump has picked Scott Pruitt, Oklahoma Attorney General and a critic of Barack Obama’s climate change policies, to lead the Environmental Protection Agency.
