Conrad Colman hopes to become the first person to finish an around the world sailing challenge on an electric yacht.

He spoke to ELN via telephone as he neared the last leg of the Vendée Globe solo circumnavigation challenge.

Mr Colman’s boat uses renewable technology to recharge its electric batteries and motor, forgoing the traditional diesel generators favoured by his competitors to power their radios, lighting and other essentials.

He said: “The purpose of this programme was to show that the technology is robust, mature and is ready to be used, not just by sailors but also by the general public.

“I have sailed all the way around the world with it so it’s a reliable system, I’ve hammered it in some of the most demanding conditions that you can find on this planet and it’s come up roses.”

Mr Colman is expected to finish the event by the end of this week, having started sailing on the 6th of November last year.
