A total of 419,599 energy consumers switched suppliers in February, a fifth up on January.

That’s according to the latest switching data published by Energy UK, which says this is the highest figure in this month for the past three years.

It also shows an increase in the number of customers moving from large suppliers to small and mid-sized companies, representing 27% of switches at just above 110,000.

Energy UK says the introduction of the Energy Switch Guarantee, which now covers 70% of the market, means it is now simpler, safer and faster to switch than ever before.

Lawrence Slade, CEO of Energy UK said: “These ever increasing switching numbers, alongside twice the number of existing customers making a tariff change with their existing supplier, demonstrate that competition is working for more and more consumers.

“If customers are unsure if they are on the best deal, check either by speaking to their current supplier or one of the 50 suppliers active in the market.”

There were 4.8 million energy supplier switches in 2016, a new record.
