E.ON is building a 25MW waste-to-energy plant in Sweden.

The €250 million (£218.9m) thermal waste recycling facility in Stockholm will produce electricity, heat and biogas and is expected to significantly improve the sustainable development of the city.

It will be made up of a combined heat and power (CHP) facility and a biogas plant, adjoined by a large recycling centre owned by Ragn-Sells, Sweden’s largest waste management operation.

Materials unable to be recycled at this plant will be sent to one of the other facilities and used to create energy and organic fertiliser for agriculture.

E.ON’s remote heating network will be integrated into the greater Stockholm area while older generation facilities, such as the three thermal power stations in the area, will be taken out of operation.

The biogas facility is planned to come online in 2018 and the CHP plant is expected to be operational in 2019.

E.ON also hopes to become more sustainable through its recently launched smart meter projects in Germany.
