The UK Government should increase its support of ‘Show Homes’ to inspire energy efficient retrofits.

That’s according to a new study from the National Energy Foundation (NEF), which demonstrates the benefits of Show Homes in raising awareness of energy savings through retrofit and renovation.

In particular, it identifies the award-winning SuperHomes as beacons of inspiration for homeowners – these are more than 200 domestic properties that have reduced emissions by at least 60%.

The study follows last year’s Bonfield Review, also known as Each Home Counts, which the NEF claims avoided the issue of stimulating extra demand for domestic energy efficiency retrofits.

Three in five visitors say it is very likely they will improve the energy efficiency of their homes following a visit to a SuperHome.

Gabby Mallett, Director of Households and Communities at the NEF, said: “If this government is serious about cutting carbon emissions and renovating our aged housing stock, as well as reducing fuel poverty, it needs to address the issue so clearly avoided by the Bonfield review and stimulate some demand.

“What better way to do that than by supporting initiatives such as Show Homes, which have been shown to work?”

Elderly and vulnerable people whose homes are in poor condition in Ireland will be entitled to receive “deep retrofits” free of charge.
