Electricity has been generated for the first time at the Walney Extension Offshore Wind Farm.

A total of 40 turbines have been installed so far and power is now being exported to the National Grid.

Located off the coast of Cumbria, the wind farm will have a total capacity of 659MW when the rest of the 47 turbines have been installed.

They will generate enough electricity to power more than half a million UK homes.

Developer DONG Energy says Walney Extension will surpass London Array to become the world’s largest operational offshore wind farm once fully commissioned.
