Uber has announced plans to add a green surcharge to its fares to help pay for cleaner vehicles.

It has pledged for all UberX cars in London to be electric or hybrid by the end of 2019.

To achieve this, it will be launching a ‘Clean Air Fund’, worth more than £150 million to help drivers transition to cleaner cars.

They will be able to access up to £5,000 towards the cost of upgrading their car.

The fund will start next month with a £2 million investment from Uber and 35p will be added to every ride in the capital.

UberPOOL trips will however be excluded from the 35p addition as passengers are already helping cut emissions by opting to share their journey with another rider.

The company also plans to launch its own diesel scrappage scheme, giving up to £1,500 of Uber credit to the first 1,000 Londoners who wish to scrap their polluting cars.
