The head of Drax Group is to step down at the end of the year.

Dorothy Thompson, who has been in charge for 12 years, will be replaced by the company’s current Chief Financial Officer Will Gardiner.

He will take over from 1st January 2018.

Drax recently announced plans for a gas plant and battery storage facility as part of its effort to reduce coal use.

Ms Thompson, one of the few female bosses of a FTSE-listed company said: “Drax Group plays a strategic role in the UK electricity sector, generating around 16% of UK renewable electricity, is a world leader in the production of wood pellets and is a leading challenger brand in the supply of electricity to businesses.

“I retire knowing the Group is in excellent shape: it has the right strategy, the right team and in Will, the right leader.”
