An agreement between Siemens and the University of Sheffield marks the start of a new UK-wide network to link universities with the Internet of Things (IoT).

The partnership aims to accelerate the use of smart data, boost technology skills and promote knowledge exchange to meet the needs of an increasingly digitised industry.

The organisations involved say the widespread adoption of digital equipment and integration is crucial to UK competitiveness, efficiency and productivity.

Siemens will connect the university’s estate and research assets into its IoT platform, which is designed to share data, improve relationships between academics and industry partners, uncover new business models and create commercial opportunities.

Juergen Maier, CEO of Siemens UK, said: “Using digital technologies to transform business operations is key for the UK to drive competitiveness, improve national productivity and take advantage of the commercial opportunities offered by an increasingly digitalised industry.”
