India received its first ever shipment of crude oil from the US last week.

The 1.6 million barrels of shipment was loaded at the Saint James, Louisiana and Freeport terminals in Texas and was received in the eastern Indian state of Odisha.

It is part of the 3.9 million barrels of crude oil ordered by Indian Oil Corporation, which will process it at its East Coast refineries.

Other firms Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum have also placed orders for around 2.9 million barrels and one million barrels respectively.

The US Department of Energy said Indian companies “ramped up” purchases of US crude oil following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit with President Donald Trump.
