Barclays has issued a €500 million (£441m) green bond claimed to be the first issued by a UK bank to fund domestic assets.

The funds raised will be used to finance and refinance residential mortgages on properties in England and Wales, which are in the top 15% of the lowest carbon intensive buildings in these countries, based on estimated energy efficiency.

Green bonds are designed to raise finance for assets that have positive environmental and climate benefits.

The market has grown significantly and according to the Climate Bonds Initiative, around $93.6 billion (£71.3bn) has been issued across different sectors this year.
