Multi-million-dollar contract to upgrade geothermal units in the Philippines

ABB has won the deal for a major retrofit programme

ABB has won a multi-million-dollar contract to upgrade six geothermal units at two power plants in the Philippines.

The order from Energy Development Corporation (EDC) and its subsidiary Green Core Geothermal includes a retrofit programme for the units at Palinpinon 1 and 2 with around 200MW of capacity, which were commissioned in 1983 and completed in the mid-1990s.

The contract includes the conversion of a mechanical electro-hydraulic system into a digital version and the replacement of the existing low-pressure turbine hydraulic equipment with a new high-pressure solution as well as comprehensive cybersecurity solutions.

The project aims to deliver a modern control system integrated across all plants that can be easily upgraded over time.

The new solution is expected to increase operational and maintenance efficiency and facilitate central control and remote monitoring of the power plants and steam fields from one location.
