The announcement was made at a meeting of the Energy Council in Brussels last week attended by UK Energy Minister Charles Hendry. He told parliament that Günther Oettinger European Commissioner for Energy announced the strategy would cover the development of energy infrastructure in the EU, as well as research into new energy technologies despite the economic downturn.

Energy Ministers at the meeting from all 27 member states also talked about securing gas supply and how all the EU countries can agree to move towards and increase in 20% in energy efficiency by the end of this decade. Some of the ministers argued for targets to be set per country based on national circumstances.
