David Cameron has famously vowed to make his government “the greenest ever” and his own department would seem to be doing its bit to achieve this.

Since the beginning of this month, all 18 government offices have been having their energy use logged and then rated in a league table which compares usage with September.

And Mr Cameron’s own Number 10 office is currently second in the table, having cut its energy use since the corresponding week in September by 7%.

Top of the table is the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (a 9% drop) while third place goes to the Department for Transport (a 6% cut).

The bottom three are the Department of Work and Pensions, Culture, Media and Sport and then Health.

And where is the Department of Energy and Climate Change? Out of 18, it’s coming in at number 12.
