Energy Secretary Chris Huhne has branded the UK’s renewables industry as “amateur”.

Speaking at a clean technology conference yesterday, he said the UK was “playing in Europe’s amateur league when we ought to be in the Premiership”.

He also lambasted the country’s Euro-renewables ranking. “We are 25th out of 27 EU members states on renewables.”

Mr Huhne said the key to reversing the UK’s poor track record on renewables was for “the power sector to lead the way when it comes to cutting carbon out of our economy. For us to meet our ambitious climate change goals, it must be close to zero carbon by 2030.”
