Consumer group Which? has called the government’s Energy Bill a “golden opportunity” to address the energy woes of the country.

The bill was published in Parliament yesterday and Which? chief executive Peter Vicary-Smith said: “Millions of us spend more than we need to on energy, either from being on the wrong tariff or because our homes are poorly insulated. The Energy Bill is a golden opportunity to address this.”

He said telling consumers about cheaper tariffs on their bills is “meaningless if they end up paying even more when they switch”.

“Minimum standards for tariffs, such as price guarantees and advanced warnings about hikes, are a must to make it easier for people to get the best available deals,” he added. “Green Deal must work for consumers, not just for energy suppliers and providers of ‘green’ products. Independent advice, robust standards and strong enforcement are all vital to ensure that this happens.”
