On the back of Wednesday’s drive to ramp up UK marine renewables, Greg Barker hinted at what to expect from the upcoming Electricity Market Reform.

The Minister of State told ELN: “The industry needs TLC: Transparency, longevity and certainty. Whether its marine or other forms of innovation, it still needs that long-term certainty, that there’s a pathway through to development and deployment. Feed in Tariffs will give that certainty.”

Mr Barker spoke at RenewableUK’s ‘Wave and Tidal 2011’ conference in London, of the vast potential the UK could unlock, with the right funding.

With pressing low carbon targets to meet, those in the renewable sector were there to demonstrate Britain’s cutting edge in leading the way for marine technologies.

However, Mr Barker insisted there was a much wider vision held in Whitehall: “We’re not just seeing it as how can this help our 2020 targets, but are looking at it much more broadly in terms of what’s the opportunity to create a major UK industry, employing tens of thousands of people, making a serious long term contribution to our energy security.”
