Japan has raised the alert level of its struggling nuclear plant Fukushima Daiichi from four to five on the seven-point international scale for atomic accidents.

The decision puts the country’s disaster on a level with the Three Mile Island incident in the United States in 1979.

At a press conference, Japan’s nuclear agency said it was increasing Fukushima to level 5 on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale in light of the damage to the cores and continuing radiation leak, reported Kyodo News agency.
